Some common characteristics that will indicate a virus hoax are:
- warning that opening it will be dangerous
- request that this warning be widely distributed
- attempt to authenticate warning by naming big names like MS and AOL
- implies that virus is wide spread
- states that virus is uncontrollable
Times change. We used to say that viruses can't spread through e-mail, and that was true at the time. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. However, hoaxes are still in the wild, and get spread through innocent people who are only trying to help.
